Player Awards - 2009 Season.

Under 13s

Nathan

Best & Fairest – Nathan Whelan.

This year it goes to a kid who we really threw into the thick of things when we needed a level head.  He consistently polled well in the votes throughout the season and with his versatile skill set he could play in any position on the ground, and still have an impact.  Having spent most of the year on the defensive part of the ground, he’s proved to be one to watch out for in the coming years.  He is a very smart player, with a big heart and a team player attitude.  Congratulations on a sensational season Natho!

Korfo

Runner Up Best & Fairest – Jordan Korfiatis.

The ‘Runner Up’ award goes to a kid who hadn’t received a mention in the votes until round 8 but from there on in, he finished strongly.  Korfie is the kind of player you don’t want to play on, his physical game & his ball winning ability are second to none.  He came VERY close to winning the longest kick competition at our end of season training session and during the year showed us he could nearly kick a goal from the Eastern Freeway. Korfie has become a great asset to the playing group, with his silky skills & marking ability to rival Buddy Franklin.

Sam

3rd Best & Fairest – Sam Zito.
Sam is the sort of player you can see going all the way to the elite level.  Sam Zito has talent unrivalled in his age group, making the Interleague side was pretty much a given for this bloke.  Being tagged every week was a test of his patience & skill. He managed to show his colours a few times and gave everyone something to talk about.  He also made it into the League Best & Fairest Top 10, an outstanding effort Hawka!

Most Improved – Mark Tuangthong.

The Chef is the winner of the Most Improved Player this year.  He’s made it known to us that he really deserves his spot on the ground when he gets on. He quickly became a much relied upon player when we needed a good defender, keeping his opposition player scoreless many times.  Congratulations on a great season, keep up your good work.

Coach’s Award – Marcus Higgins.

The coach’s award this year goes to a kid who has a real talent for reading the play, and putting himself (and other players) in the right spot at the right time.  This spirited footballer, Missy, was really a strong part of our team, and often showed courage and drive at the ball (often spurred on by his old man yelling “Get in there Marcus!”) to rival players of a more mature age.  If we had to pick a captain for the whole year, we’d be hard pressed to find a better candidate.  Missy also filled in for the under 14’s in their finals campaign, where he played one of his best games of the year.
